Why static audiences break down at Christmas

Christmas shopping might still feel a little way off, but for brands and planners, the season is already taking shape.

And one of the challenges is that there isn’t really a single ‘Christmas shopper’.

The same person can move from hunting for value around Black Friday, to finding the right gifts, planning to host friends and family, and prioritising convenience as Christmas gets closer.

That makes fixed audience definitions less useful as the season develops.

Christmas is not one audience or one moment - it's a series of shifting missions.

In his latest article for Advertising Week, Mobsta’s Head of Strategy and Planning, James Sexton-Barrow, looks at how behavioural signals can help brands build a more responsive picture of what people are actually doing, and why.

The key takeaways

Christmas is a series of changing missions.
Who someone is matters, but so does what they are trying to achieve at a particular moment.

The Christmas shopping window starts earlier than we might think.
Mobsta data shows that 72% of Black Friday shoppers bought Christmas gifts during the promotional period in 2025, while 34% of UK consumers started their Christmas gift shopping in November.

Behaviour adds context that demographics alone can’t.
Visitation, location and transactional signals can help marketers understand when motivations are changing, and what might be most relevant next.

More data isn’t necessarily more intelligence.
The opportunity is not simply to add more signals, but to identify which signals matter for the question a brand is trying to answer.

For marketers, the takeaway is simple: audience segmentation can be a useful starting point, but it shouldn’t be the finished strategy.

The closer brands can get to understanding behaviour as it changes, the better chance they have of showing up in the right moment, with something that actually feels relevant.
